11 Design Technology
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr D. Kenway.
In Design Technology students develop skills by designing and making Products.
Students are expected to take their high-quality Prototype Products home with them on completion of their course.
Over the year students will develop their skills in the Design Technology practical area, further developing their skills in how to research, analsye, design, and make products, using a range of tools and equipment including Computer Aided Design and Manufacture, laser cutting and 3D Printing.
Students will work on Design and Make projects within a Context / Theme.
Within the given Context / Themes students will research, design, develop, manufacture, and test their own Concepts and Prototype Products for specific purposes and Customer / Stakeholders of their choosing.
Throughout the course Students will complete a Design Portfolio using Google slides which will document their research, designing, making and testing.
This portfolio of work will be how they are assessed for their project work against Technology Achievement Standards.

Year 10 Design Technology recommended but not essential
Course Costs and Equipment/ Stationery requirements
There is a course charge of $80.00 to cover basic material costs for student’s making.
If students wish to make a larger product for their Prototype, there is the option for students to buy the additional materials required.
Pathway
Design Technology is also offered at Year 12 and 13 level.
Design Technology is a useful subject for students wishing to pursue a career in:
Product Design, Furniture Design, Spatial Design, and the Building and construction industries.

Conditions of Assessment
Assessor involvement during the assessment event is limited to providing general feedback which suggests sections of student work that would benefit from further development or skills a student may need to revisit across the work.Student work which has received sustained or detailed feedback is not suitable for submission towards this Standard.
Examples of student submissions could include one of the following methods of presentation:
- a digital slide presentation (no more than 20 slides at size 12 font or bigger)
- a collection of scanned paper evidence (no more than 10 A3 sides of paper)
- a video or recorded oral presentation (3-4 minutes long) or
- a combination of the above, totalling no more than the equivalent of 750-800 words.
Students should not be limited to these and decisions about format should be made in negotiation with the teacher. At least one image of the outcome should be presented as part of the evidence for this Standard.
Selection of evidence for submission is to be carried out by the student.
At the start of the assessment event, assessors need to provide students with commonly used resources, tools, and equipment to support development of an outcome.
Students may access search engines, word lists, spelling and grammar checkers, dictionaries, textbooks, and people, such as friends, family, or community members.
Evidence for all parts of this assessment can be in te reo Māori, English, or New Zealand Sign Language.
