Level 2 Earth and Space Science

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms G. Thomas.

This course covers a wide range of topics including:

  • How Stars and Planetary Systems are formed and change through their life cycles
  • The interactions between Earth’s four spheres - geosphere (including plate tectonics) , hydrosphere, biosphere and atmosphere
  • Practical investigation into how craters form as a result of asteroid impacts.
  • Looking at Extreme Environments on Earth, under the oceans and in Space and the adaptations or technologies which enable animals and humans to survive.
  • How energy from the sun and the centre of the Earth drives important earth cycles and processes.
  • Exploring contemporary Earth and Space Science issues and how they are portrayed by the media.




Course Costs and Equipment/ Stationery requirements

A workbook is recommended for learning enhancement and the cost of this is S26. There is also a field trip to the Auckland Observatory, the approximate cost of this is $15.

Pathway

This course would be very useful towards careers in all aspects of science and especially: astronomy, meteorology, environmental management, conservation, geology, marine science, and climate science.
