10 English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESL)

Course Description

Course Objectives:
To improve students’ English so they can:

  • understand and use English across the school curriculum
  • understand and use English in the community
  • develop confidence in using English

Course Content:
This course offers six lessons per week of English language support for students whose first language is not English. It is a cross curriculum programme and gives support and instruction in the four basic strands of language – reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will increase their vocabulary; learn skills to assist their reading and writing in different curriculum areas; and English grammar. The course also contributes towards preparing students for the English language programme  in Year 11.

This programme is a topic-based language course which focuses on Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills, with an emphasis on grammar and vocabulary.

Pathway

Students take this subject if English is not their first language and their test results indicate that they need a higher level of extra support with English language learning. Students should discuss with their ESOL and English teacher whether they should take this subject.
