10 Core Music (Half year course)

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms V. Le Cren.

This half-year course is for students with an interest in Music who want to develop skills and knowledge taught in Year 9 Core Music and Year 9 Music Option. This course follows on to Year 11 Music.  It prepares the way by building knowledge and competencies through performance, composition, music literacy and exploring cultural and historical contexts of music.  

Students will be required to be having lessons on an instrument or in voice, either provided through group lessons at school (funded) or privately. Students may also take this course as a useful way of keeping up their practical involvement in school music.


Prerequisites: 

  • Either Year 9 Option or Year 9 Core Music. 

  • Experience and lessons on an instrument or voice. (Lessons may be accessed privately or through our Itinerant Music Teaching programme at school)


Course Objectives: 

  • To be involved with practical music making through solo and group performances. 

  • To develop musical ideas through music composition and song writing.

  • Understanding music in context, through investigation of a range of music styles and contexts.

  • Music theory: Building on musical literacies including reading, writing and understanding music theory.


Course Content: 

  • Students prepare and perform brief performances using appropriate performance skills and techniques on an instrument/voice of their choice.

  • Students work individually and in groups to create and represent music composition/songs.

  • Introduction to and using Music technology.

  • Understanding music in context through listening and research work. 

  • Building music literacies/theory and using these skills to analyse different styles/genre of music.


Notes:

  • Students must be prepared to work on improving their performance skills and are expected to have regular lessons on their chosen instrument (includes voice). 

  • You may offer any instrument or voice for performance work. 

  • This course allows more advanced students to extend themselves into chamber music or other group performances (eg rock or jazz groups).

  • Students will have the opportunity to participate in a class trip to experience professional music performances (voluntary).

Recommended Prior Learning

Year 9 Core Music and/or Year 9 Music Option.

Experience and lessons on an instrument or in voice.

Students not currently having instrumental and/voice lessons will be required to do so through our group music lessons at school (funded) or privately for individual lessons. We are able to help with suggestions if needed.

Pathway

Over the next few years, you will be able to progress to some or all of the following:
Year 11 Music, Year 12 Music (Level 2 NCEA), Year 13 Music (Level 3 NCEA), Scholarship Music
