11 Art Photography

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms M. Martin.


During this course students will learn creative expression and technical skills in digital photography. Students will develop an understanding and appreciation of photography both historically and aesthetically.

  • Cyanotype - Students will learn about and use this traditional process to generate a portrait 
  • Domestic Still Life - Students will print a folio submission of work that explores ordinary objects or environments within the home and transform them into the extraordinary using photographic pictorial and technical skills.
  • Documentary Photography - Students will research and understand a range of New Zealand photographers/artist models that use documentary genre. They will then use their understanding to continue to refine camera and photographic skills while documenting their own person, place or event.
  • Turangawaewae Tableau - Level 1, 4 credit, internal standard. Students will incorporate photographed elements of their 'Turangawaewae' into a tableau format using advanced photoshop editing skills.


Course Costs and Equipment/ Stationery requirements

$50 TAKE HOME COMPONENT - Students taking this course will produce products that will be taken home and therefore will be asked to pay $50 for the cost of materials. Further details are provided at the beginning of year.
STUDENTS OWN DSLR CAMERA - Prefer students to have their own single lens reflex digital camera. We recommend the Canon EOS range e.g 1500D or 200D. Further details about what sort of camera to buy are given out at the beginning of the year.
Optional - HIRE SCHOOL CAMERA - $60 per year. The department does have a Camera Hire System which is run via the school library - 'hire agreement' forms are handed out at the start of the year. For students hiring cameras it is highly recommended that students purchase their own 16GB SD card.
PRINTING COSTS - Students will also need to maintain credit on their print account during the year to support this course and it is strongly advised that students have a personal storage device such as a portable hard drive.

Students studying this course learn how to generate ideas, think, critique, problem solve and manage deadlines. These are essential skills for any creative career such as Fine arts, art history, commercial photography, graphic design, journalism, architecture and interior design, advertising, fashion photography, publications and the film industry.
