11 Te Reo Maori
Course Description
This course builds on practical skills with content relating to te ao Māori, tikanga Māori and Māori culture. This Year 11 course has a strong communication focus. Students will learn a variety of karakia and whakatauki and how to communicate about personal opinions, daily events and future plans. The topics that will be covered include sports, a childhood event, hospitality and home.

Course Overview
Term 1
Unit 1: Mahi Hākinakina - Sports.
In this unit you will learn how to communicate about past habits and routines; about present and past states, feelings and opinions; and you will learn to compare and contrast people, places and things.
Term 2
Unit 2: Ōku Maumaharatanga Pai - My Best Memories.
In this unit you will learn to communicate about past activities and events; about past states, feelings and opinions; and about problems and solutions.
Term 3
Unit 3: Manaakitanga - Hospitality.
In this unit you will learn to give and follow instructions; to communicate about problems and solutions; and immediate plans, hopes wishes and intentions.
Term 4
Unit 4: Ko wai au? - Who am I?
In this unit you will learn to communicate in formal situations; to communicate about past states, feelings and opinions; and to describe, compare and contrast people, places and things.

Recommended Prior Learning
Year 10 Te Reo Māori or similar level of prior learning.
Pathway
Continued study in Te Reo Māori Year 12, 13 and at university. Te Reo Māori is an official language in Aotearoa, and Māori speakers are now in high-demand. Being able to speak Te Reo Māori will give you insight into the Māori culture and open doors to many career paths including: journalism, hospitality and tourism, teaching, performing arts, law, medicine, social work and business.
