11 Mathematics

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms M. Sinhalage.

Mathematics is a compulsory subject in Year 11.

The skills developed in Years 9 and 10 are consolidated and extended. Students will learn to interpret data, communicate clearly, think logically, look for patterns and solve problems. The aim of mathematics at this level is to help students understand society and play a responsible part in it. The course is designed to provide a sound foundation for further study of mathematics.

Each student will be allocated a mathematics class based on the recommendation of her teacher in Year 10 and performance in the end–of–year 10 common assessment tasks, in consultation with the Director of Mathematics. Students placed in 11MTA classes will have very good grades in Year 10 assessments. Entry to 11MTX, which does a Level 2 maths course, is by invitation only.  Students who are still working towards NCEA Numeracy will be placed in 11MTN, where they will have support to gain NCEA Numeracy along with their maths learning.

Each mathematics course will offer the opportunity to complete an NCEA standard.  Students who do not yet have NCEA Numeracy will have the opportunity to complete the Numeracy assessment.

Recommended Prior Learning

Completion of Year 10 mathematics.

Course Costs and Equipment/ Stationery requirements

Most students will require a Graphics Calculator, about $180 (an older model is fine), and a homework book, about $25.
Students in 11MTN will require a calculator, about $20.

Pathway

Mathematics is a foundation for further study in a range of learning areas including science, commerce, medicine and information science. Satisfactory completion of this course will allow students to proceed to a Level 2 Mathematics or Statistics course.

Assessment Information

Students in 11MTH and 11MTA will sit the AS 91947 external standard, and do a school practice exam for that standard. There will also be a number of topic assessments throughout the course.
Students in any Mathematics or Statistics course at year 11 or above who do not yet have NCEA Numeracy will have the opportunity to sit the Numeracy common assessment task US32406.
Students in 11MTN will complete two internal standards (91944 and 91945) as well as the Numeracy common assessment task.
