Course Description

Note: This is a course for second language learners ONLY.

Course Content:

The Year 11 Chinese course builds on your practical skills with content including: transport, sports, leisure activities, holiday, Chinese cuisine, celebrations, and future plans. This course provides you with realistic opportunities to use your Chinese language, such as by entering Chinese Writing competitions for secondary schools, watching some classic Chinese Films directed by some well-known directors, and/or by learning some beautiful Chinese songs and poems.

You will also have the opportunity to use your Chinese language while experiencing authentic Chinese cuisine where possible.

You will have access to Education Perfect or Quizlet and other online Chinese resources to support your learning both inside and outside of our Chinese classroom.

Recommended Prior Learning

Year 10 Chinese or equivalent (this is a course for second language learners ONLY). This course does not suit students whose home language is Chinese. These students are able to join the Chinese heritage language class when they reach Year 12 and 13. We understand that students may have learnt Chinese in a number of different ways, therefore if you have other experience please talk to Ms Lin (mlin@apps.eggs.school.nz).

Course Costs and Equipment/ Stationery requirements

Highly recommended: NiHao 3 Student Workbook approx. $70 (Students purchase theirs at the EGGS stationery shop)

Highly recommended: $20 Education Perfect subscription (one payment for all languages)

Students must also purchase a 1B5 exercise book (approximately $2.00).

Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to participate in cultural enrichment activities. These cost between $2 to $25 depending on the activities.

Research analyst (someone can help companies to make better business decisions for their Asian/Chinese market), global marketing specialist, government agent (with more than 300,000 Chinese migrants in NZ, our government needs you), Chinese teacher, ESOL teacher (you can teach both in non-English speaking countries as well as in English speaking countries), translator, interpreter, cultural promoter. Mandarin Chinese is a great language to learn that will open the doors to a world of opportunities.
