Level 2 Geography
Course Description

Geography is about people and their environment.
This course aims to:
- Develop a knowledge and understanding of the world's people and places and the differences that exist within it.
- Allow students to consider and form opinions about current issues facing us.
- Help students develop skills to carry out research.
- Use information and communication technology to enhance learning.
- Develop the use of spatial techniques using google earth and/or ARCGIS.
This course will cover:
- Explaining the unique natural characteristics of natural environments. We will focus on the Tongariro Volcanic Environment, its natural characteristics and interactions with people as a result.
- Looking at global inequalities of development. How and why are there huge differences around the world? We will look at different scales, local, national and global, as well as different aspects of development, economic, social and political. An understanding of how and why the developmental differences exist is key to our learning as well as an understanding of different perspectives towards development.
- An understanding of spatial patterns at different scales and how they have developed through natural, cultural and historical factors.
- The global pattern of coffee production and the significance of coffee production on people and communities.
- Studying large urban environments, such as mega cities around the world and identifying the residential patterns that form within them and why.
- Geographical skills such as topographic mapping and statistical techniques will be integrated into the course.
Field trip: Three days in Tongariro National Park.
Recommended Prior Learning
None, but Year 11 Geography would be an advantage.
Course Costs and Equipment/ Stationery requirements
Optional field trip to Tongariro National Park to support learning for an internal and external achievement standard. Cost was $330 in 2023, but may alter for 2024.
Pathway
Geography can be studied through to Level 3 NCEA and Scholarship. It has the advantage of continuing as both a science and arts subject at university. It is very useful alongside other subjects as it offers an understanding of the world necessary for a variety of disciplines. Geography also leads to careers in planning, economic and social geography, surveying, marketing, tourism and Geographic Information Systems.
