12 Te Reo Maori
Course Description
This course will further develop your competence in:
- listening, speaking, reading and writing in Te Reo Māori
- understanding of tikanga Māori
- researching and presenting information gathered on Te Ao Māori
- expressing personal opinions and thoughts on a given topic.
The topics that will be covered include a famous person, Māori prophets, news and current events and language revitalisation.

Course Overview
Term 1
Unit 1: Tangata Rongonui - A Famous Person
In this unit you will learn to read about and recount actual or imagined events in the past; and you will learn to offer and respond to information and opinions.
Term 2
Unit 2: Te Ao Pāpāhō - News and Current Events
In this unit you will learn to offer and respond to information and opinions, giving reasons; and to offer and respond to advice, warnings and suggestions.
Term 3
Unit 3: Whakarauora Reo - Language Revitalization.
In this unit you will express and respond to approval and disapproval, agreement and disagreement; and communicate about future plans.
Term 4
External preparation.
Course Costs and Equipment/ Stationery requirements
Education Perfect $20 (once for all languages).
Recommended Prior Learning
Year 11 Te Reo Maori or similar level of prior learning.
Pathway
Continued study in Te Reo Māori Year 13 and at university. Te Reo Māori is an official language in Aotearoa, and Māori speakers are now in high-demand. Being able to speak Te Reo Māori will give you insight into the Māori culture and open doors to many career paths including: journalism, hospitality and tourism, teaching, performing arts, law, medicine, social work and business.
