Level 3 Geography

Course Description

Geography is about people and their environment.

This course aims to:

  • Develop a knowledge and understanding of geographic environments. Enable students to analyse what happens in both natural and cultural environments.
  • Allow students to develop their geographical skills, to carry out research and to analyse contemporary geographic issues facing us globally and within New Zealand.
  • Encourage spatial thinking and an understanding of the significance of place and reasoning about our world.

This course will cover:

  • Natural processes within a coastal environment of Muriwai
  • Cultural process of tourism development in Hawaii
  • Developing skills such as topographic mapping, statistical techniques, graphing and resource interpretation in a practical context within a research topic
  • Current Global Geographic Issues such as HIV/AIDS pandemic
  • Analysing the contemporary geographic issue of the deterioration of the Hauraki Gulf environment
  • Completing a geographic research process within a coastal environment

Future Areas of interest and study:
Geography can be studied at university level as part of a science or arts degree and as a first year subject for law. It is considered a language rich subject for The University of Auckland, and is a popular choice of 'arts' subjects for gaining access to the Bachelor of Health Sciences pathway to medicine. Geography is very useful alongside a number of other subjects to build understanding of the world necessary in all disciplines. Career opportunities are varied but can include geographic information systems, environmental consultancy, planning, teaching, environmental law.

Recommended Prior Learning

Level 1 and/or 2 Geography would be an advantage. Sound Literacy skills are a requirement.

Pathway

The skills and content learned in Geography compliment a variety of other subjects. Research and analytical skills as well as developing spatial awareness and an understanding of the geography of the world is an advantage in many future career pathways.
