Level 3 English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs B. Poole.

This course forms the second part of a two year programme for those students who were in 12ESL in the previous year.

The course offers the opportunity to extend skills of academic reading, writing, speaking, listening as well as study skills in the NZ school context. Students are given the opportunity to achieve Level 2 (UE) Literacy credits. Students will sit both internal and external assessments.

Course Overview

Term 1
The programme is a topics-based language course which focusses on Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills with an emphasis on grammar and vocabulary.

Bullying: Reading of research on the issue of bullying
Reading strategies, purpose of texts, comprehending questions.
EAP Standard 22751 Read and process information in English for academic purposes (6 credits)

Term 2
Bullying: Research report writing
Essay writing skills, referencing.
EAP Standard 22750 Write a crafted text for a specified audience using researched material in English for an academic purpose.

Term 3
Study of short texts and academic essay writing.

Term 4
Short Story, preparation for external assessment.
English Achievement Standard 91098: Analyse specified aspect(s) of studied written text(s), supported by evidence

Recommended Prior Learning

Students have engaged with the 12ESL course. Students must be eligible for ESOL support.

Pathway

This course will focus on academic reading and writing. It will offer students the opportunity to gain credits towards the University Entrance Literacy requirements.

US 22751: Read and process information in English for academic purposes (some students may have achieved this standard in 12ESOL)
