Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr O. Williams.

The course is designed to foster the enjoyment of literature, develop critical thinking, build literacy skills, and promote confident self-expression.

The course is structured around at least 3 of the 4 guiding topics:

  • Social Inquiry - investigating topical issues
  • Heroes and Villains
  • Get me started!
  • Aotearoa New Zealand

Teachers may also choose one thematic topic to fit their own and their students' interests. Each topic provides the opportunity for students to engage with a range of literary texts - class studied and own choice, research and explore non-fiction resources, experiment with and develop writing in a range of styles for specific purposes, build confidence with oral and visual language, and respond to topics and ideas with from their own point of view.

Students also complete an external NCEA assessment in English.

Course Costs and Equipment/ Stationery requirements

$13 for Poetry in Action performance (schedule permitting - tbc)

Pathway

This common course leads onto Year 12 English, English Foundation and Media Studies. We also hope to encourage a lifelong interest in literature and ideas, and develop the communication and critical thinking skills that underpin many careers.
