Course Description

Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing with confidence are the foundations of language acquisition and development. These four modes are the core of communication in all languages.
This English Language course aims to develop the competence and confidence of each student in using English appropriately and accurately through a topic-based approach, that integrates a carefully designed range of tasks in all four language modes.
This course will support students’ broader learning in their other curriculum areas.
Course Overview
Term 1
The programme is a topics-based language course which focuses on Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills with an emphasis on grammar and vocabulary. Online porgrammes are used to enhance vocabulary, reading skills and grammar learning.
Getting to know you: writing and speaking about ourselves and our classmates.
Novel study: practising comprehension and writing a literary essay.
Term 2
Cultural identities: speaking about an aspect of your own culture, writing information.
Poetry: reading for understanding and enjoyment, creative writing.
Term 3
Maoritanga Research: independent research and report writing
World issues: current events, argument writing.
Term 4
Inspiring Women: biographical texts, independent reading.

The following assessments will enable teachers to grade students' English Language Learning Progression and determine their proficiency levels:End of topic tests including Reading and Writing assessments

Engagement with online programmes
Students will also be supported to attempt the literacy co-requisite testing.
