Course Description

Course objectives:

  • Explicitly develop critical thinking skills
  • Explore ethical principles and apply to real world problems
  • Encourage collaboration, creative idea formation, and communication skills
  • Teach how to think, not what to think
  • The course will promote: thinking for yourself,discussion and collaboration through a large variety of fun activities that encourage idea development.
  • The course aims to foster both breadth and depth of thinking, that will provide useful tools for other subjects and for life as a citizen of the world.

Topics covered:

  • Critical thinking and metacognition
  • Logic and argumentation skills
  • Ethical theories and principles
  • Applied Ethics (ethics of war and of punishment)
  • Exploration of Key Belief Systems and Traditions
  • A citizenship project

Future areas of interest and study: Philosophy is the ultimate "transferable work skill." With its emphasis on reason and argumentation, philosophy is an excellent preparation for a career in law, religion, business, international diplomacy, social work, medical management or writing as well as post-graduate education.

Recommended Prior Learning

None, however Year 9 or Year 10 philosophy is beneficial.
