10 Textiles & Design (Full year course)
Course Description

This course encourages students to gain an appreciation of Technology while developing the creativity and skills to design and manufacture a variety of textile products used in fashion, costume and interior design. In Year 10 you will really expand your horizons with what is possible in the world of Textiles and Design. The foundation skills you learnt in Year 9 are a springboard for developing your design ideas and making these a reality! As well as design illustration skills, you will gain the necessary skills to use and adapt commercial patterns, fit and adjust apparel, create applied designs for fabric using a variety of techniques, as well as accurately use a plain sewer and overlocking sewing machine to sew woven and knit fabrics. The course is intended to provide you with with a sound background for senior NCEA Textiles and Design Technology. You will need to purchase fabric for some of the projects and a commercial pattern for one project which will be discussed at the start of the course.
Course Objectives:
- To give students the opportunity to work with a range of fabrics and techniques through the production of a variety of products.
- To give students an understanding of the fundamentals of fashion design.
- To give students an understanding of the fundamentals of Textiles and surface design
- To give students a broad understanding of societal aspects of the fashion industry.
- To help prepare students for Year 11 Textiles and Design.
Techniques covered:
- Fashion illustration skills to communicate clearly textile and apparel design ideas
- Colour and design elements re clothing/designing.
- Surface design- free embroidery, applique, screen- printing, textiles techniques
- Fabrics - their performance, suitable use and care.
- Patternmaking and construction in Textiles garments
- The fashion industry – the good and the bad.
Course Costs and Equipment/ Stationery requirements
Students are required to purchase their own fabrics for their hoodie/sweatshirt and one other project.
Pathway
This subject continues into Years 11, 12 and 13 and leads into careers such a Fashion/Apparel/Costume/Textile designer, patternmaker, merchandiser, stylist, garment production manager, E- textiles developer and many more!
