Although next year timetables are yet to be finalised, course selection is now finished. Any changes to student courses will now take place in January.

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms V. Le Cren

All students in Year 9 take one term of Core Music.  This course follows on to Year 10 Music (Full Year) and 10 Core Music (Half year course).  This course introduces students to the language of music through performance, composition, music literacy and exploring cultural and historical contexts of music.  

Course Objectives: 

  • Perform as individuals or in small groups. 

  • To develop musical ideas through collaborative music composition. 

  • Understanding music in context, through investigation of a range of music styles, contexts, music literacies, 

Course Content: 

  • Introducing students to practical music making by gaining some keyboard and ukulele/guitar skills. 

  • Students work in groups to create and represent music composition.

  • Introduction to Music technology.

  • Understanding music in context through listening, the language of music (theory), and research work.


  • Students have access to Music Lessons on a range of instruments through the itinerant music programme.

  • Students are encouraged to get involved in Co-Curricular Music groups.  We have a large range of bands, orchestras and choirs to suit every level.

Where Next: 

Over the next few years, you will be able to progress to some or all of the following:

  • Year 10 Core Music (Half Year), Year 10 MUS (Full Year)

  • Year 11 Music (Level 1 NCEA) 

  • Year 12 Music (Level 2 NCEA) 

  • Year 13 Music (Level 3 NCEA) 

  • Scholarship Music
