Level 3 Education for Sustainability

Course Description

This course is for those who are curious to learn about environmental issues and have a strong desire to become involved in protecting our environment and make change for good. Students will explore, analyse and discuss current advances in both local and global sustainability issues from scientific and sociological perspectives. The aim of this course is to give students a better holistic understanding and appreciation for the natural world, as well as help each students identify what they can personally do to help make our lifestyle more sustainable.

Course Overview

Term 1
Evaluate how a personal action contributes to a sustainable future. Students choose their own personal action and those students who are involved in Polyfest in Term One are encouraged to use this as their personal action.

Term 2
Evaluate measures that may be undertaken to improve a biophysical environment. This course looks at island reserves and mainland reserves as a way to improve our biodiversity. Students have the opportunity to visit Tiritiri Matangi as part of this unit.

Develop a strategy for a business that will contribute to a sustainable future. Most students investigate a business that they or their parents are part of and work together to develop and evaluate a strategy.

Term 3
Analyse different world views and how they could contribute to a more sustainable future. This is an external report assessment that is to NCEA for marking.
