Course Description

This course is for those who are curious to learn about environmental issues and have a strong desire to become involved in protecting our environment. Students will explore, analyse and discuss current advances in both local and global environmental issues from scientific and sociological perspectives. The aim of this course is to give students a better understanding and appreciation for the natural world, as well as help each student develop both practical and inquiry skills that allow them to think scientifically. Students will also be required to take personal action to contribute towards a more sustainable future.
To support the cross-curricular nature of this course, the teaching is shared between two specialist teachers; half of the year with a science specialist (AS 90810, AS 91154) and half with a social science specialist (AS 90811, AS 90813), with both covering content for the external assessment (AS 90814).
Course Costs and Equipment/ Stationery requirements
Approx $160 for an overnight trip to Tawharanui and Cape Rodney - Okakari Point marine reserves to support learning for AS 90811.
Recommended Prior Learning
10EVS and/or 11EVS is strongly recommended and would be an advantage, but is not required.
Pathway
This course leads on to Year 13 Education for Sustainability. Further study of Environmental Science, Ecology or Sustainability courses at university.
Careers - an expanding range: ecologist, zoologist, climate change or GIS scientist, scientific officers (for WWF-NZ, UNESCO), research scientists (NIWA, ESR, Landcare), environmental engineer, environmental lawyer, DOC (ranger, pest manager), resource planners in local and regional government, zookeeper, environmental educator, sustainability officer.
Credit Information
This course is approved for University Entrance.
Total Credits Available: 20 credits.
Externally Assessed Credits: 4 credits.
Internally Assessed Credits: 16 credits.
