Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

Year 12 Music. At least 4 years music tuition and the ability to read music confidently, or HOD approval by interview. 


This Music course is underpinned by the four arts strands:

  • Understanding the arts in context
  • Developing practical knowledge in the arts
  • Developing ideas in the arts
  • Communicating and interpreting in the arts

These strands identify the skills, knowledge, and understandings that students develop through learning in the arts and are intertwined.

13 Music gives students an opportunity to build on the knowledge and skills gained in the 12 Music course. Students will work individually and collaboratively to create, interpret and represent music ideas. They will continue to develop literacies in music and communicate musically with increasing sophistication.

The objectives of the course are that students will:

  • be empowered to develop theoretical and practical skills and knowledge and actively make connections between them.
  • plan and perform their own music and the music of others, in an individual capacity or in groups
  • compose music
  • show understanding of music by identifying, describing, analysing and classifying music in different contexts

Assessment Information

This course allows students to construct a course suited to their area of specialty and growth. Assessment will be chosen from the following achievement standards to add up to approximately 20 credits.

MS 3.7 - 91422 Musical Knowledge - Analysis 4 credits Internal
This standard involves analysing a substantial music work.
A selection of works will be studied from which you may choose one to be examined.

MS 3.8 - 91423 Musical Knowledge - Context 4 credits External
This standard involves examining the influence of context on a substantial music work.
Context refers to cultural, social, historical, aesthetic & geographical. A selection of works will be studied from which you may choose one to be assessed on.

MM 3.1 - 91416 Solo Performance 8 credits Internal
Perform two programmes of music as a featured soloist
This achievement standard involves the presentation of music, using appropriate techniques to express and communicate the music as a performer. The presentation will demonstrate an understanding of, and feeling for, the idiom or style of genre. It could consist of a number of shorter pieces, or a smaller number of more substantial pieces. For the performance, the featured soloist may be an unaccompanied or accompanied soloist, or in a small group.

Demonstrate ensemble skills by performing two substantial pieces of music as a member of a group
This achievement standard involves presenting a performance of a programme of music by an individual as a member of a group. The programme will comprise a performance of at least two pieces or movements of a contrasting nature. In addition to the focus on technical and presentation skills, there is also a focus on the individual’s ensemble awareness.

Communicate musical intention by composing three original pieces of music
This standard involves the presentation of music, using appropriate techniques to express & communicate the music as a composer. The presentation will demonstrate an understanding of, and feeling for, the idiom or style of genre.

MM 3.11 - 91849 Song Writing 8 credits Internal
Compose three original songs that express imaginative thinking
This standard involves the presentation of three original songs, using appropriate lyrics with melody and harmony lines to express the songwriter’s intention. The presentation will demonstrate an understanding of, and feeling for, the idiom or style of genre.

OR

MS 3.9 - 91424 Arranging 4 credits Internal
This standard involves creating two arrangements for an ensemble.
This achievement standard involves arranging two pieces of music for an ensemble of at least three independent parts.
