9 Latin

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms P. Wright

Are you interested in learning about cultures and societies from the past? Are you fascinated by words and language? If so, Latin is the subject for you! Latin is the language of the ancient Romans, the people who lived in Italy and the Mediterranean region 2000 years ago. But it is far from being a dead language!!

Whatever you go in the modern world, you will meet the Romans in common expressions, in other languages, in mythology, in literature and the arts, in building styles, in the names of plants and animals, in scientific and professional terminology and in the legal and technological fields. More than 50% of English vocabulary comes from Latin words.

Here’s what you’ll do in Year 9:

Our course follows the life of the family and friends of Caecilius, a real Roman citizen whose house can still be visited today. You will read stories that are set in the beautiful Italian town of Pompeii in the months leading up to the famous eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD. You will learn the basics of the language including vocabulary and grammar, which is the study of how language is put together. Alongside that you will learn about Roman culture and society - gladiators, slavery, theatres, daily life, dinner parties, houses and more, and you will enrich your English vocabulary when you learn English derivatives of common Latin words.

Most of all, you will have fun while exploring the ancient language and society on which our modern world is based.

Latin may be selected as a subject in Years 9 and 10.
