Welcome to year 13 Japanese at EGGS!
Japan is known for its cultural influence on the world. From food, to anime and manga, to traditional clothing and decoration, Japan’s culture is unique and beautiful. Speaking Japanese opens the door to experiencing this new world of culture, history and tradition.
As NZ’s 4th largest trading partner, there are many opportunities for Kiwis to use Japanese both in Japan and at home.
In this course, you will study towards 21 credits at NCEA L3. The course will have a ‘world matters’ focus, where we further develop our ability to communicate clearly and in depth. You will learn to express and react to the ideas and opinions of others. We will cover topics such as:
- Japanese history
- The environment
- Life after school and careers
You will be entered into 4 standards:
3.1 Listening (external)
3.3 Interaction (internal)
3.4 Reading (external)
3.5 Writing (internal)

Recommended Prior Learning
Year 12 Japanese. However we understand that students may have learnt Japanese in a number of different ways, therefore if you have other experience please talk to Ms J Murphy ([email protected]).

Highly recommended: $28 Education Perfect subscription (one payment for all languages)
Students will also need either a 2B8 exercise book or a binder and refill for their coursework (approx. $5).

Pathway
Japan is the 4th largest importer in the world and 12th in foreign investment. This, combined with the close ties between Japan and NZ, provides a variety of exchange, scholarship and career opportunities. Universities in Japan are becoming increasingly eager to accept foreign students on exchange, and all major NZ universities offer Japanese courses.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.

Only students engaged in learning and achievement derived from Te Marautanga o Aotearoa are eligible to be awarded these subjects as part of the requirement for 14 credits in each of three subjects.
