In Year 9 French at EGGS, we learn a lot, grow our brain, establish the foundations to become fluent by Year 13, try French food, listen to French music, try out authentic French games, learn about the culture, have a lot of fun and much more.

Our team of French teachers have a breadth of experience with the French language, some having grown up in France with others having studied at university in France. Every year, we have a French language assistant who speaks French with the students and helps them practise having a conversation in French at the appropriate level.

In Year 9 French, students have the opportunity to participate in many different activities, including but not limited to:

Fortnightly two-on-one time with our French language assistant

French Day with French students from all year levels

French breakfast with French pastries and hot chocolate (in France, we have hot chocolate in a bowl at breakfast time!)

Auckland Junior French Speech Competition

Buying a crêpe in French from an authentic crêperie

What opportunities are there after Year 9 in French?

  • French Day - an annual day full of fun activities and food with all the students at EGGS studying French.
  • Exchange to Tahiti - every year, two students in Years 11 or 12 can go on a 4-week exchange to our partner school in Tahiti, French Polynesia.
  • Auckland Junior Speech Competition - Years 9 and 10.
  • Tour de Quiz - Year 11 Blooket / Kahoot / Quizlet Live and more competition with other schools.
  • Senior Quiz Competition - Years 12 and 13 can participate in a Quiz Night against other Auckland schools.
  • Experience the tradition of eating a Galette des Rois.

  • Visit to Atelier du Fromage (a French Café in Newmarket).
  • DELF exam - students can choose to sit the DELF exams. These are exams organised by the French Government for people around the world to gain a qualification in the French language. This qualification can go on CVs and it is recognised worldwide. Students who choose to sit this exam receive tutorials to prepare for them. These exams can enable students to study at a French university or gain French citizenship if they are living in France.

Recommended Prior Learning

No prior knowledge of French is necessary. We start from the very beginning. However if you have learnt French before, you won't be bored! We expand on the basics you will have learnt in intermediate and you will be impressed by how much you will be able to say by the end of Year 9.

Course Costs and Equipment/ Stationery requirements

Optional but highly recommended: $26 Education Perfect subscription (one payment for all languages).

We have different cultural activities throughout the year, but as an indication, the French breakfast is also approximately $5.00 and the crêpes cost between $5.00 and $10.00 depending on which crêpe is wanted. Both of these are optional.

Students must also purchase a 1B5 exercise book for classwork (approximately $2.00).

Description Type Value
French Breakfast Optional $5.00
Education Perfect Voluntary $26.00
$31.00

Pathway

You can take French all the way from Year 9 until Year 13, by which point, you can consider yourself "fluent".
Becoming fluent in French is an end in itself but it is also a stepping stone to learning other languages, an invaluable skill to support any career and it's that extra aspect that employers look for in their employees. It enables you to stand out from other candidates. Regardless of your intended career, French will open doors to exciting new opportunities that would not otherwise be available to you. Let's not forget that French is spoken in over 50 countries around the world.
