Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

Year 9 Chinese or equivalent (This course does not suit students whose home language is Chinese. These students are able to join the Chinese heritage language class when they reach Year 12 and 13). We understand that students may have learnt Chinese in a number of different ways, therefore if you have other experience please talk to Ms Lin ([email protected]).


Course Objectives:

Learning Year 10 Chinese will help you:

  • develop your ability to speak, listen, read and write in Chinese
  • develop an appreciation of Chinese culture
  • extend your communication and interaction skills
  • foster cultural and linguistic understanding in general.






Course Content:

You will learn spoken and written Chinese to use in a variety of everyday situations including daily routines, fashion, shopping, making phone calls, eating out and weather. Cultural topics will include food, festivals, Chinese brush painting, etc. You will watch Chinese movies and enjoy singing Chinese songs. Language games are played to enhance your learning. You will have access to Education Perfect or Quizlet and other online Chinese resources to support your learning both inside and outside of our Chinese classroom.

Continued study in Year 11, 12, 13. Mandarin Chinese is university entrance accredited subject, and is also offered by all major New Zealand universities. HSK Chinese Proficiency Exam; exchange and scholarship opportunities. Here's just a few of many Chinese career opportunities that await you!!
Research analyst (someone can help companies to make better business decisions for their Asian/Chinese speaking markets), global marketing specialist, government agent (with more than 300,000 Chinese migrants in NZ, our government needs you), Chinese teacher, ESOL teacher (you can teach both in non-English speaking countries as well as in English speaking countries), translator, interpreter, cultural promoter. Mandarin Chinese is a great language to learn that will open the doors to a world of opportunities.



			
					
					Course Costs and Equipment/ Stationery requirements
										

Highly recommended: NiHao 2 Student Workbook approx. $70 (Students purchase theirs at the EGGS stationery shop)

Highly recommended: $28 Education Perfect subscription (one payment for all languages)

Students must also purchase a 1B5 exercise book (approximately $3.00).

Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to participate in cultural enrichment activities. These cost between $5 to $30 depending on the activities.
