Course Description

NOTE: This course cannot be selected alone - you need to choose either 2 or 4 half year courses in Science.

Chemistry is about understanding the properties of different substances and materials in the world around us and the ways these substances can change.

Objectives:

  • To gain a basic understanding of chemistry and be aware of the role of chemistry in our society.
  • To be able to interpret and use chemical information.
  • To understand theories and concepts to account for some chemical and physical properties of substances.
  • To gain practical skills in handling substances and manipulating equipment safely.

This course is a half year course and will prepare the students for the Year 12 Chemistry course.

The topics are:

  • Atomic Structure
  • Acids and Bases
  • Types of Chemical Reactions – precipitation, displacement, decomposition
  • Carbon chemistry and combustion reactions

The course will also look at increasing the chemical literacy of the students. For example, is calcium metal really in milk? Alkaline water, what is it and why is it being marketed?

All half year courses will include formative and summative assessment. There are two topic tests.

Pathway

Level 2 Chemistry

Tertiary courses with study leading to a scientifically related field such as medical or health sciences, pharmacy, veterinary science, physiotherapy and food technology.
