Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

This course is for students with prior first language experience to consolidate their prior learning; further develop and gain credit for their proficiency. This course is recommended for students who have had more than 5 years of experience in a Chinese-medium school (where all the subjects are taught in Chinese in the school).


Should I join 12CHH or 12CHM?

- I did a lot of my education in a Chinese-speaking country (more than 5 years): 12CHH.

- I did most of my education outside of a Chinese-speaking country, we speak Chinese at home, but I don't write and/or read it often: 12CHM this year or 13CHM next year (please contact Ms M Huang and Miss E Hu).

- I did most of my education outside of a Chinese-speaking country, but I have taken Chinese classes most of my life and I can write Chinese really well: either 13CHM (when you are Year 13) or 12CHH. Please contact Ms M Huang and Miss E Hu.

This course is for students who are fluent or close to fluent in Chinese.

Course Content:

In Year 12 Chinese Heritage Language, you consolidate your abilities using practical, transactional language to communicate information and ideas and further develop your skills using the more abstract language to express and justify your opinions. The main idea at this level is Youth Matters. We will use a variety of texts and online resources. Topics include:

  • Study & Career Plans
  • Festivals & Customs
  • Leisure activities & Healthy living
  • Part-time work & Social network
  • The world of youth
  • Helping with the Literacy CAA
  • Recording radio shows

** Please note that if you have limited Chinese reading and writing abilities, you should see Ms Huang or Miss Hu to determine if this course is right for you.

Level 3 Chinese Heritage Language

Continued study in Year 13 and university. Mandarin Chinese is university entrance accredited subject, and is also offered by all major New Zealand universities. HSK Chinese Proficiency Exam; exchange and scholarship opportunities. Here's just a few of many Chinese career opportunities that await you!!
Research analyst (someone can help companies to make better business decisions for their Asian/Chinese speaking markets), global marketing specialist, government agent (with more than 300,000 Chinese migrants in NZ, our government needs you), Chinese teacher, ESOL teacher (you can teach both in non-English speaking countries as well as in English speaking countries), translator, interpreter, cultural promoter.
