Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

Students have engaged with Year 11 ESOL or Year 11 English. Students must be eligible for ESOL support.


This course will focus on the development of academic English language skills. Skills include reading a range of texts and applying reading strategies to show understanding of academic texts; planning, organising and writing an essay for academic purposes, including referencing; analyzing a visual text and writing and essay in an exam situation. Academic vocabulary extension will be part of the course.

This is designed to be a two year course which will allow students to work towards completing the requirements of the literacy co-requisite and gaining the approved NZQA literacy requirements for entry to New Zealand universities.



Course Overview

Term 1
The programme is a topics-based language course which focuses on reading and writing skills with an emphasis on grammar and vocabulary.
Students will learn and use a range of reading strategies and writing skills to develop their ability to comprehend and produce academic texts.

Students will learn to use a range of reading strategies to comprehend academic texts. There will be a range of texts focusing on the effects of technology use in the classroom.

Term 2
Students will continue to develop their reading skills. They will also practise writing an academic essay, which will require them to use and reference resources. There will be a focus on writing accurately in a formal, academic style.
Students will complete internal assessments for EAP Standards 30511 and 30507, which can be used towards the requirements for the Level 1 literacy co-requisite.

Term 3
Students will study a film, analysing various technical aspects. There will also be a focus on writing an essay in an exam and understanding exam questions.

Exam preparation for film study (AS91099)
