Recommended Prior Learning

Students who select this course will have completed the 11PHP, 11PSS or 11HEA courses. They will have shown they are active participators in Physical Education lessons, in all activities, including swimming. They will have shown that they are organised with bringing PE gear when taking part in practical activities. In Health lessons, they will have shown interest in the topics covered and be willing contributors to discussion.  Students will have completed all assessments in year 11 PHP / PSS or HEA courses.

This course is designed for any student who values developing and maintaining their health and wellbeing, so personal commitment to this is essential.






This course is designed for any student who values developing and maintaining their health and wellbeing. The learning and practical activities in this course will set students up for leaving Epsom Girls as a well rounded person, with life skills, knowledge and good habits to set them up for success beyond school life. Being physically active during the school day has proven benefits that will support student's academic achievement, cognition, engagement, attendance and mental health. 

The units of work students will take part in are:

  • Becoming a Leader - The learning in this unit focuses on developing student's own leadership skills. Students will learn communication and organisational skills, lesson planning and effective teaching skills. They will plan a physical activity based lesson to teach to others. There is a 4 credit internal assessment for this unit, where students will evaluate the effectiveness of the leadership skills they used while teaching their lesson. Learning in this unit will also support students develop skills for leadership opportunities in Year 13.
  • Active and Awesome - Students will take part in a variety of physical activities to develop their own fitness as well as be involved in regular physical activities.They will take part in a variety of community based physical activities such as yoga, pilates, dance and fitness, so they are aware of community opportunities to continue being physically active once they have left school. There is a 4 credit internal assessment attached to this unit, which is based on practical performance in a physical activity.
  • What's My Goal ? -  The learning in this unit involves individual goal setting for students, for what they want to achieve during the year. Goals might relate to developing health lifestyle habits, academic goals or life outside of school such as gaining work experience.  They will write an action plan for how they will achieve their goals and this will be supported by practical workshops on things such as organisational skills, study skills, training plans etc. There will be regular check ins and reflection around these.
  • Keeping Myself Safe - Students will gain a variety of skills to keep themselves safe throughout their lives. They will complete a Basic First Aid course ( and qualification ), take part in a Self Defence course and complete the Love Me Not programme ( NZ Police run course about safety in relationships ).  We will also cover staying safe while travelling in NZ and overseas. Relationship education is also part of this unit and this will include building on the student's knowledge of consent, contraception, STI's, healthy and unhealthy relationships as well as inter-personal problem resolution.  Students will gain 3 Unit Standard credits when they complete the First Aid Course.
  • Becoming an Adult - The learning in this unit covers money management ( budgeting, taxes, insurance, student loans ), Flatting ( practicalities, realities and troubleshooting ) and Nutrition.The nutrition learning will build on student's nutritional knowledge and they will complete a project where they design a budget friendly and nutritious meal for flatters. There is a 5 credit internal assessment attached to the nutrition project.
  • Life after EGGS - Students will build on their career planning, making sure they are doing the subjects needed for further study or employment after they leave school. They will practice interview skills and write or update their CV. They will explore requirements for tertiary study such as rank score, scholarships, university application processes as well as GAP years and apprenticeships.

This course can lead on to physical activity related and health pathways in the future. But it has a much more holistic purpose, in that it will equip students with knowledge and lifeskills to maintain their health and wellbeing, to set them up for any career pathway in the future.



			
					
					Course Costs and Equipment/ Stationery requirements
										

First Aid Course $100 - NB this cost will be part subsidised by the school ( Final charge to be notified in 2026 ).
Self Defence Course - NB this cost will be part subsidised by the school. Student cost is $20 per student.
