Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

Satisfactory completion of Year 12 Health or HOD approval.

Satisfactory completion means students have shown good work habits in the 12HEA course. They will have been consistent with completing class work, contribute to class discussions and activities and have shown they are organised with their time by meeting checkpoints for assessment.  All assessments will have been completed and handed in by the due date.



The Year 13 Health course involves 3 internal assessments and 1 external assessment.

  • Ethical Issue:  Students will investigate abortion as a contemporary dilemma or ethical issue. They will explore the implications ( consequences ) of abortion being legal in New Zealand. These could be positive or negative. Students will investigate four NZ based groups / organisations and explain their values, attitudes and beliefs that are behind their opposition or support of abortion.
  • Health Practices:  We will learn about the health condition of stress, including causes and responses to stress. Students will investigate health practices currently used in NZ that help treat stress.  These could be Western Scientific Medicine ( eg Cognitive Behavioural Therapy ), Complimentary and Alternative Medicine ( eg Reiki ) and Traditional Medicine ( eg Acupuncture ). The assessment for this topic asks for students to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of the health practices they have investigated.
  • NZ Health Issue:  Students will explore the health issue of vaping by 15-24 years olds in NZ. They will learn about the factors that cause people to vape, the implications ( consequences ) of vaping  and suggest strategies that could reduce the amount of young people vaping in NZ.
  • International Health Issue:  Students will learn about a variety of international issues based around gender, culture and sexual reproductive health. The external exam will see students using some provided resources and their own knowledge to explain the factors that are causing the issue, the implications ( consequences ) of the issue and suggest strategies that could improve the health of people in relation to the issue.
