10 Te Reo Māori
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Ms J. Carter.
This course is an extension of the Year 9 Te Reo Māori course. In Year 10 Te Reo Māori there is a strong communicative focus. The students will learn about Māori culture, grammar and language, and will have the opportunity to develop their skills in the following:
- Tikanga - values, customs, and beliefs
- Waiata – songs and singing
- Karakia - ritual chants, prayers, and incantations
- Whanaungatanga - building relationships
- Whakapapa - Genealogy
Course Content:
By the end of the year students will be able to speak, listen, read and write in Te Reo Māori in the following areas:
- Ko Wai Ahau? Who Am I?
- Te Haerenga ki te Marae - Going to the Marae
- Te Haerenga ki te Tāone - Going to the City
- Mahi Hākinakina - Sports and Leisure Activities
- Ngā Mahi a te Rā - Daily Routines
- Tōku Akomanga - My Class
- Te Hararei - Planning a Holiday
- Manaakitanga - Hospitality
Please let us know if you come from a Te Reo Māori speaking whānau and/or have come through Kōhanga Reo and/or Kura Kaupapa or Rumaki/Reorua etc., as we may be able to advance you to another year level.
Course Overview
Term 1
Unit 1: Ko Wai Ahau? Who am I? Te Haere ki te Marae - Going to the Marae
In this unit you will learn how to communicate about where you are going in the past tense, present tense and future tense and the purpose of your journey, and to communicate about the various modes of transport to get you around.
Term 2
Unit 2: Te Haere ki te Tāone - Going to the City and Mahi Hākinakina - Sports and Leisure Activities.
In this unit you will learn how to communicate about where you are going in the past tense, present tense and future tense and the purpose of your journey, and to communicate about the various modes of transport to get you around. You will also compare and contrast habits and routines specific to sporting and leisure activities as well as give and follow commands.
Unit 3: Ngā mahi a te Rā - Daily Routines.
In this unit you will learn to communicate about people's occupations, daily routines, customs and habits, past activities, such as who did or didn't do something, and when an event occurred.
Term 3
Unit 4: Tōku Akoranga - My Class.
In this unit you will learn to communicate using commands, questions and answers specific to the classroom, to record your attendance using past and present whereabouts, to say an event has or hasn't yet happened, and to use special verbs to show a particular state has been reached.
Unit 5: Te Hararei - Planning a Holiday.
In this unit you will learn to communicate about plans for the immediate future, to talk about obligations and responsibilities when planning and going on holiday, to express availability and seek permission, and to communicate that something will or will not be done.
Term 4
Unit 6: Manaakitanga - Hospitality.
In this unit you will learn to communicate about the quality, quantity and the cost of things, to request, offer, and accept things, to communicate who owns something, and to name who a particular job is for.

Year 9 Te Reo Maori or equivalent level.

Te Reo Māori was the first language and is therefore the indigenous language of the islands known as Aotearoa, being The Great Fish of Māui (the North Island), The Canoe of Māui (the South Island), and The Anchor of The Canoe (Stewart Island). It’s the language that was spoken by our ancestors and bequeathed to us as a precious treasure. It wasn’t handed down to us so that it would become extinct like the moa, but so that we would continue to use it to describe every aspect of the world around us. So, learn it, hold on to it, and speak it as a source of wellbeing for you and your whānau, hapū, and iwi.
There are lots of career paths for Māori speakers, in fact, every career path that exists in Aotearoa! If you want, you’re able to always speak Māori and in all places, so do it kōhine mā!
Assessment Information
Ākonga will be assessed in all four language modes (Whakrongo or Listening, Kōrero or Speaking, Pānui or Reading, and Tuhi or Writing) in a variety of ways every term.Pathway Tags
