Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Ms J. Carter.
This course will further develop students’ competence in:
- listening, speaking, reading, and writing Te Reo Māori
- understanding important and relevant issues in Aotearoa and abroad
- utilizing everyday phrases and idioms
- researching and presenting information gathered on Te Ao Māori
- expressing personal opinions and thoughts on a given topic
The topics covered may include Te Ōrokohangatanga Rā Anō o Te Ao (creation stories), Ngā Atua Māori (the Māori Gods), Kōrero Tuku Iho mō Tāmaki Makaurau me Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei, tae noa mai ki ētahi atu iwi (Histories about Auckland and Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei, as well as other iwi), Māori leaders, news and current events, and language revitalisation.
To support your learning, you may want to attend iwi and hapū wānanga reo or noho marae, and/or night classes or online Te Reo Māori classes, as well as access Education Perfect and various Te Reo Māori apps etc.
Please let us know if you come from a Te Reo Māori speaking whānau and/or have come through Kōhanga Reo and/or Kura Kaupapa or Rumaki/Reorua etc., as we may be able to advance you to another year level, or consider you for our rumaki class.
Course Overview
Term 1
Unit 1: Te Ōrokohangatanga Rā Anō o Te Ao, Ngā Atua Māori, Ngā Rangatira, Tangata Rongonui rānei - Creation Stories, the Gods, Leaders and Famous People
In this unit you will learn to read about and recount actual or imagined events in the past; and you will learn to offer and respond to information and opinions.
Term 2
Unit 2: Tāmaki Makaurau me ōna Iwi, Te Ao Pāpāhō hoki: Auckland and its Iwi, as well as News and Current Events.
In this unit you will learn to communicate about certainty and uncertainty, possibility, and probability; and to develop an argument with reasons.
Term 3
Unit 3: Whakarauora Reo - Language Revitalization.
In this unit you will express and respond to approval and disapproval, agreement and disagreement; and communicate about future plans.
Term 4
External preparation.
Recommended Prior Learning
Year 11 Te Reo Māori or similar level of prior learning.

Te Reo Māori was the first language and is therefore the indigenous language of the islands known as Aotearoa, being The Great Fish of Māui (the North Island), The Canoe of Māui (the South Island), and The Anchor of The Canoe (Stewart Island). It’s the language that was spoken by our ancestors and bequeathed to us as a precious treasure. It wasn’t handed down to us so that it would become extinct like the moa, but so that we would continue to use it to describe every aspect of the world around us. So, learn it, hold on to it, and speak it as a source of wellbeing for you and your whānau, hapū, and iwi.
There are lots of career paths for Māori speakers, in fact, every career path that exists in Aotearoa! If you want, you’re able to always speak Māori and in all places, so do it kōhine mā!
Assessment Information
There are three internals and two externals. The internals are Whakarongo, Kōrero, and Waihanga Tuhi. The Whakarongo internal consists of at least two listening activities while the Kōrero and Waihanga Tuhi internals involve assembling a portfolio of speaking and writing pieces which demonstrate the ability to speak and write about a range of different topics and in different styles or genres etc. The two externals are Pānui and Tuhi.Credit Information
You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
