Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

NCEA Level 2 Te Reo Māori or equivalent.




This course will further develop students’ competence in:

  • listening, speaking, reading, and writing Te Reo Māori
  • understanding important and relevant issues in Aotearoa and abroad
  • utilizing everyday phrases and idioms
  • researching and presenting information gathered on Te Ao Māori
  • expressing personal opinions and thoughts on a given topic

The topics covered may include Te Ōrokohangatanga Rā Anō o Te Ao (creation stories), Ngā Atua Māori (the Māori Gods), Kōrero Tuku Iho mō Tāmaki Makaurau me Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei, tae noa mai ki ētahi atu iwi (Histories about Auckland and Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei, as well as other iwi), Māori prophets, news and current events, and language revitalisation.

To support your learning, you may want to attend iwi and hapū wānanga reo or noho marae, and/or night classes or online Te Reo Māori classes, as well as access Education Perfect and various Te Reo Māori apps etc.


Course Overview

Term 1
Unit 1: Ngā Atua Māori, Te Atua Hou, me ngā Poropiti Māori - The Māori Gods, the new God, and the Māori Prophets.

In this unit you will learn to recount a series of events to inform, persuade or entertain; and/or to develop an argument with reasons.

Term 2
Unit 2: Tāmaki Makaurau me ōna Iwi, Te Ao Pāpāhō hoki: Auckland and its Iwi, as well as News and Current Events.

In this unit you will learn to communicate about certainty and uncertainty, possibility and probability; and/or to develop an argument with reasons.

Term 3
Unit 3: Whakarauora Reo - Language Revitalisation.

In this unit you will learn to respond to selected and adapted texts in Te Reo Māori that are about Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori; and communicate the same information in different ways to different audiences.

External preparation.

Assessment Information

There are three internals and two externals. The internals are Whakarongo, Kōrero, and Waihanga Tuhi. The Whakarongo internal consists of at least two listening activities while the Kōrero and Waihanga Tuhi internals involve assembling a portfolio of speaking and writing pieces which demonstrate the ability to speak and write about a range of different topics and in different styles or genres etc. The two externals are Pānui and Tuhi.
